Subrata Gupta IAS as Special Roll Observer and CM Advisor
Subrata Gupta’s selection drew attention because of his past. He was Managing Director of WBIDC during the 2008 Singur standoff over the Tata Nano plant, and Business Today and The Wire reported that from 2020 he was kept in smaller departments while junior officers got bigger portfolios.
On 28 November 2025, the Election Commission named him Special Roll Observer for West Bengal, alongside 12 IAS officers posted as Electoral Roll Observers for the districts. Two days later, he visited Falta in South 24 Parganas to check whether the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) followed the Commission’s directives. He told The Wire that booths reporting very few ‘uncollectable’ enumeration forms needed close checks.
By early April 2026, about 91 lakh names, nearly 11.9 percent of the pre-revision electorate, had been removed from the rolls. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleged arbitrary deletions and accused Gupta of favouring the BJP, while the Commission rejected the TMC’s charges against the exercise as baseless. On 27 May 2026, the Supreme Court upheld the Commission’s power to conduct the SIR.
After the Commission relieved him on 7 May 2026, TMC leaders criticised his appointment as the Chief Minister’s adviser. In August 2026, Gupta told PTI that land pooling was among the options the state was studying to make land available for industry.
